Mad Monster Party?

(1967) **
This Rankin-Bass stop-motion horror spoof should have been a hoot but instead was a bloated yawn fest, punctuated by random and unnecessary (shiver) musical numbers.

I tackled animated horror last year, I somehow missed this one and guess that was a good thing. I found most of what I watched fell into the same fate as this.

"random and unnecessary (shiver) musical numbers."

That's all I need to hear. I despise musicals. I even hate it when the Simpsons break out into a musical number. I have no interest in Broadway or any form of entertainment where people break out into songs. I just lace musicals in the "I don't get it" drawer of my brain (see also NASCAR, country western music, and football).

I'm with JPX with the musicals. This looks like a real stinker. (shiver)

I also don't like the question mark in the title. Aren't there laws against that? Also Dracula looks like a smug know-it-all.

This one is tough for me because it's stop motion and most of the people I work with have fond memories of an enduring classic (it's the same guys who did Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, don't you know). In fact, the guys I'm working for now are considered so highly in the world of stop-motion that they were invited to do some commentary on the recent dvd release of this flick.

However, somehow I completely missed it when I was kid and thus it has no nostalgia value for me. I saw it for the first time recently and was pretty unimpressed. I don't even dislike musicals like you grumpy old coots, but these songs were pretty weak.

And I never noticed the question mark.

i now have a greater context for JPX's comment in the Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter review.

still, how are lesbian vampires not enough to overcome your dislike of musicals? lesbian vampires, JPX! how much bigger a trump card do you need?
