The Astro-Zombies

(1968) *

A mad scientist and his creepy, mute assistant are animating corpses using a combination of plastic organs, impervious blood substitute, and solar power cells. Unfortunately their first successful experiment made use of a psychopathic killer corpse (insert Abby Normal joke here). Both the CIA and foreign governments are extremely interested in these experiments for their own purposes.

Mr. AC and I have an unofficial and non-exclusive zombie subtheme going this year, and when I read that Catfreeek was going in a zombie-heavy direction, I had to post ASAP to warn Catfreeek and everyone else: don't watch this one! If it's not already, it would make a great MST3K, because in addition to being ridiculous, derivative, and a poor film in every way (acting, costumes, plot, continuity, etc. etc.), there are many unnecessarily extended and boring scenes just crying out for commentary. Mr. AC and I tried to fill the gaps with witty commentary of our own but we were both nearly asleep by the end. At one point I had to remind Mr. AC that if his eyes didn't stay on the screen he wouldn't be able to count this one toward his total. Apparently there's a direct-to-video 2002 sequel, "Mark of the Astro-Zombies." I've added it to the queue but make no promises about actually watching it.

Damn, AC, you and Mr. AC are certainly scraping the bottom of the barrel this year, how are you able to get through these? You need to watch some quality horror to keep yourselves energized. You could always cover all of Romero's "Dead" films, his 6th one is about to be released.

Where's Mr. AC's haiku?

excellent decision catfreeek! glad to take this one for the team.

you are too right, jpx. only three movies in and i'm starving for some quality horror. we do have romero's "dead" films in the queue but i don't know when/if we will get to them. mr. ac's haikus should be up by now!

The movie might suck, but as titles go it's pretty rad. "Astro-Zombies." That's great. I'm not surprised someone used it for their band's name (or so Mr. AC tells us).

Destroy All Monsters is a band, too.
