Cloverfield

(2008) ****

During a surprise party for Rob, being documented "wedding style" by his best friend Hud, it seems that an earthquake hits Manhattan. The party goers head up to the roof to see if they can see anything. They get more then they bargained for as a huge explosion sends flaming pieces of building raining down on the city.

Hud keeps the camera rolling as they get down to the street in time for the now infamous money shot of the head of the Statue of Liberty crashing down in front of them.

From then on it is an all out race across the city as Rob is determined to rescue his true love who is trapped in her apartment. The creature is not only completely destroying everything in it's path, it has it's own hidden arsenal that is released on the people.

I was nervous about seeing this movie because I thought the hand-held camera thing was going to make me sick. I had a few oogie moments, but not anything really bad. And I thought in some ways it was an ingenious way to film the movie. The tension built by the flashes of the monster really work. My only complaint is that parts of the film are so dark, which I know is realistic - but I wanted to see more detail! I thought this was an excellent ride. I actually cared about the characters, even though we only get to know them through quick snatches of film. It was tense, scary and totally fun. I highly recommend it!

I really liked this movie too. When it first started I was concerned about the shaking, but soon I didn't even notice it, well not in a bad way.

I liked everything about this movie except the design of the big monster. I thought it looked 'tupid.

Well you are something of a monster connoisseur, Octo. I can see your point, but it didn't detract from the movie for me.

Yup, Octo loves his monsters alright. I saw this movie a couple of months ago and I'll be damned if I can remember what the monster even looks like!

Watching a Monster movie with Octo must be like having dinner with a sommelier, they keep talking about shit you don't even notice.

"Ah, the wine is fine, but the hint of oak and cherry is a bit strong."

Cherry?! Where the fuck are you getting cherry? It tastes like every other glass of wine on earth.

i saw cloverfield twice in the theaters. once on my birthday when i was...dehydrated. i thought i was going to yak and had to look away often.

next time i made sure to be well hydrated and to take some tylenol beforehand. also, i saw it on a smaller screen and sat further away. no problems whatsoever.

i'd guess it'd work out fine on a tv screen.
