Dead Fury

(2008) ** 1/2

This animated horror parody makes up in dialog for what it lacks in visual. Loaded with dry humor and witty remarks. Max, a knockoff of Ash, leads his Pop and some friends on a hunting trip. They stumble onto a demon who they literally have to shoot until there is nothing but a pile of guts left to get rid of. But it doesn't really work. They wind up hiding out in a cabin but the demon entity is in there with them infecting his friends one by one. Max has to figure out the story behind the demon resulting in a brutal fight to the death.

This crudely animated film really took me back some years to sitting here on a Monday night with some familiar faces (I'm talking about you JSP & Stan) watching MTV's Liquid Television. The wit and the overall feel of it is like something they would have aired. It's not a great film but I was impressed to find it was a single person project. Frank Sudol wrote, directed, animated, voiced and did all the music for this film. Although it was funny the film was far too long for the content. By the time Max was methodically slashing up his third demon I was starting to yawn. In fact I actually nodded out and missed the last 20 minutes of the film. I had to back up and run it again. An interesting find in the very small selection of non-anime animated horror. Cheesy, but that good kind of cheese.

First Liquid Sky and now Liquid Television! You are bringing me back, Cat. And those pics totally look like something from Liquid TV. Man I used to love that crazy show.

Great review!

It looks like a video game. I wonder if there has ever been an animated horror film that can actually be described as "scary". Is it even possible?

Don't know, but if there is I'm going to find it!

I'm so pleased with this theme, Cat! You've dug up stuff I've never heard of (which isn't unusual, but supposedly I'm some sort of cartoon buff). I notice it tends to be pretty new stuff, is animated horror a fresh phenomenon?
