Witchfinder General

(1968) ***

The Witchfinder General is a real bastard. He’s not actually trying to rid the world of evil witches, he’s just trying to extort money by threatening, murdering and pillaging poor townsfolk. He and his band of cretins wreak havoc wherever they go, burning, drowning, torturing, branding and poking at the helpless with pointy sticks. Until he messes the wrong guy, and it’s a fight to the finish.

There is no shortage of gore and torture in this classic. Vincent Price is fantastic as the evil Witchfinder, but I’m also biased because I love the man. This film fits in beautifully with my theme of depravity and torture. It’s like five minutes of dialog, to ten minutes of torture all throughout the film. There is also a quite satisfying pipe in the ass at the end, although the character felt the pipe should have been just a little bit longer. As far as a recommendation, you either like this style old flick or you don’t. They are way more formal in dialogs then most modern horror and the acting feels more like a stage play than a film. Every time I watch one, it brings me right back to my childhood Saturday’s watching Creature Double Feature.
